Deep Woods Estate

The vineyard was acquired during 2005 by Peter Fogarty, who also owns Millbrook and the famous Lake's Folly. It's situated high on the Yallingup Ridge and is one of the highest vineyards in the region. A comprehensive vineyard redevelopment program has improved fruit quality. Excellent recent releases of both reds and whites. Latest addition is a barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc.

Featured Wines

Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Another very promising barrel sample not rated at this stage. This is an awesome Cabernet loaded with dark chocolate and black currant. It's deep and densely concentrated. Will be superb.

Ebony Cabernet Shiraz 2008

There has been a lot happening at Deep Woods since Perth businessman Peter Fogarty, who also owns Millbrook in the Perth Hills and iconic Hunter Valley winery Lakes Folly, took the place over a few years ago. The wines have been transformed at all levels. This one is a tremendous value for money wines. A mighty classy wine for one selling at less than $15. Nice perfumed notes of mint and red berry with a light touch of cedar. The medium weight palate is precisely balanced with the oak, tannins and fruit knitting together just perfectly. Impressive wine.

Reserve Chardonnay 2008 ($45)

This is already showing tremendous potential and marks a significant step in the evolution of the wines from Deep Woods. Has a distinctive creamy leesy character though the overall palate retains a tight minerally leanness in the modern idiom of Chardonnay. Oak is subdued and balanced. Impressive.

Score:92/100

Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2007 ($27.95)

Now this is a cracker. A classically structure Cabernet with all that angular tight control of the best examples of the blend. Dusty and slightly leafy but with ripe intense flavours. It's well structured and has a lovely texture. Love the vibrant red berry characters. As good as any yet released from Deep Woods.

Score:94/100

Block 7 Shiraz 2007 ($27.95)

A very classy expression of southern Margaret River Shiraz. Succulent rich fruit flavours with a savoury character that carries to a long finish. The oak is well weighted with just 30 per cent new. The fine ripe tannin structure is a feature of the wines.

Score:93/100

Verdelho 2008 ($19.95)

This has a nice tropical fruit character and while the perception is fruit sweetness it is dry. The Palate has good persistence with a nice crisp acid. Impressive typically unoaked style.

Score:87/100

Ivory Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007 ($13.95)

Seductive perfumes of tropical fruit dominated with passionfruit and ripe melon. Lovely grassy overlay. Palate is delicate and lingering with persistent flavours.

Score:86/100

Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007 ($18.95)

Attractive easy drinking wine with lovely passionfruit and grassy herbal characters on nose and plate. Crisp and fine with a delicate lifted finish. Nice wine.

Score:88/100

Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($25)

Poised and stylish Cabernet with a thoroughly elegant and silky smooth palate. Good firm structural thread and excellent balance of fruit and oak. Lingering long finish.

Score:89/100

Block 7 Shiraz 2005 ($25)

Wow this has changed since I last tasted it 12 months ago. Retains its firm elegance, but the flesh and plump middle palate has emerged from the cloak of tannin and oak. Precise and long with terrific focus.
